The first is to support and hold the overall construction of the motor together.
The motor casing also serves the purpose of protecting the internal components of the motor from the hazards of human influence or potentially polluting the environment. Motor housings are designed in such a way as to better prevent damage to electrical or mechanical equipment caused by or resulting from the contact of pried fingertips or specialized tools with inductively energized electrical conductors or rotating cooling fans. They also provide a significant reduction in internal water vapor, dirt or other airborne contaminants that could potentially harm the working component.
Another use for motor housings is heat removal. Heat-removal surfaces or air-cooled mobility paths are installed in all housings to facilitate the ability to carry away heat caused by internal dissipation and to keep the windings operating within their rated temperature range.
